What is Women on the Waves?
Women on the Waves, better known by its English name as «Women on Waves,» is a non-profit organization that advocates for women’s rights. The organization’s mission is to help prevent unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions around the world. It was founded in May of the year 1999 by Rebecca Gomperts.
According to the Dutch termination of pregnancy law, the method is only legal in clinics licensed by the Dutch health minister. In 2001, Women on Waves applied for the abortion license during the first three months of pregnancy in a mobile room. It was not until 2008 that it became a reality.
Annually, about 20 million illegal and unhealthy abortions are carried out, therefore, about 47 thousand women of 20 million who undergo unsafe abortions in which they lose their lives. As a result, the Women on waves organization travels on a boat to any part of the world where it is needed.
In a boat, Women on the Waves provides safe, legal information, trainings, workshops and abortions out of waters where the procedure is illegal. In addition, they also provide contraceptive methods.
This agency works in cooperation with local organizations to fulfill its purpose of responding to an emergency medical need, granting women the decision to take advantage of their human rights to reproductive health and safe and legal abortion. A specialized doctor, a gynecologist, and a specialist nurse travel to the ship where the abortion is carried out in order to provide the assistance and advice.
It is registered as a charitable organization under article 24, subsection 4 of Succesiewet 1956. The donations that are made to the bank account Postbank 3316 are tax deductible. The activities carried out are supported by private and philanthropic financing.
